Gin
Gin is believed to have been invented in Holland in 1650 by Dr.
Franciscus de La Boie, also known as Dr. Sylvius of the University of
Leyden. The doctor was trying to develop an inexpensive treatment for
kidney disorders so he mixed two known diuretics: grain alcohol and
juniper berries.
The drink became known as "jenever," which is Dutch for juniper. It
became popular with British soldiers occupying Holland who called it
"Dutch Courage" and brought it back to England, where it became a
favorite of the poor.
