The King Island Dairy gets its name from the island of the same name. King Island is situated south of Melbourne at the Western end of Bass Strait. This tiny speck in the Great Southern Ocean is among the few remains of the land bridge that once linked Tasmania to the Australian mainland and is also the home to one of the best cheese producing companies in the world. A traditionally made cheddar matured for 9 months and then smoked with Tasmanian hardwood. The golden rind is created during smoking which acts as a natural preservative. One of their cheeses is Stokes Point Smoked Cheddar. Its beautiful, edible golden rind, created during smoking, has a rich, smoky flavor and also acts as a natural preservative.

The Island's European origins are rooted in the sealing trade of the early 1800’s and the population was later boosted by the post war soldier re-settlement schemes. There are now fewer than 2000 people on the Island earning livelihoods from fishing, kelp harvesting, beef, wool production and the most renowned industry on King Island – Dairying.
